What is Plastic Injection Moulding?
Injection moulding is used in manufacturing to produce vast quantities of items. It is often used to create thousands and even million copies of the same part. Injection moulding systems inject materials into closed moulds and can be used to produce parts made from materials including metal, glass, polymers and more. It’s important that careful design takes place prior to the process getting underway.
Designers need to consider the part’s various features, the design of the mould, the materials it is made from and the features of the moulding machine. It is generally more cost-effective to use injection moulding for large batches of parts rather than small quantities. Items frequently made through the injection moulding can include car parts, toys, chairs, storage containers, plastic tubes, mechanical parts, packaging, bottle tops and many more.
The moulds used for injection moulding are often manufactured from metal. Some of the key benefits of injection moulding include reduced labour costs, quick production, the flexibility of design, producing small parts, high colour control, consistency, modest finishing requirements and the ability to produce multiple parts simultaneously. The price per unit is incredibly affordable when quantities are high. The more parts are produced, the more cost-effective the process becomes. Injection moulding is also well-known for its low scrap rates in comparison to manufacturing processes such as CNC machining. It is essential to the get the design right at the first time of asking. Upfront costs can be substantial because of the requirements related to design, testing and tooling. If you are considering have parts produced via injection moulding, you will need to ensure you can meet the entry cost and require enough parts to make the investment worthwhile..
Materials we mould in
Food Grade TPE
Thermoplastic elastomers, or TPE, are a type of polymer that combines the properties of plastic and rubber. This material is known for its elasticity, which allows it to return to its original shape after being stretched. TPE is a great choice for a wide range of applications due to its soft touch and durability. At Regina, we use this material to make our Filter Rings, used for water filtration machines.
Nylon
Nylon is known for being a strong and durable Plastic material. Resistant to abrasions and corrosive chemicals. Most often, Nylon is used in the Automotive Industry. Nylon comes in 3 colours; black, white and natural.
Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate Polymers are also very strong. In this case, it is highly resistant to high temperatures, up to 135°C. Polycarbonates are good for outdoor usage. Generally it is transparent and most often is blended with other materials to achieve applications with different properties. Most often used in electrical engineering, cameras, safety helmets etc..
Polypropylene
Polypropylene is a readily available, well priced and more environmentally friendly (than Polystyrene) plastic polymer. It is chemically resistant to a range of acids, very resistant to fatigue and impact, meaning it is less likely to break with lots of use! Typically in our products this is used in test tubes and more specifically in our range of blood collection tubes.
Polystyrene
Polystyrene is another widely available plastic polymer. In this case, its advantages over Polypropylene is that it is a completely clear plastic. It is the plastic polymer that most resembles the clarity of glass. However, it can be quite brittle, easily breakable, it does not have great chemical resistance and it is a flammable polymer. Polystyrene is used mostly in our blood collection tubes and our ‘Fly Tubes’ used for genetic testing.
